Pakistan Switches on 200-kW Hydropower Plant

Pakistani not-for-profit organisation Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP) on Sunday inaugurated a 200-kW hydropower plant, local newspaper The News International reported on Tuesday.

The project, located in the village of Bamburet in the Kalash valley, was completed by SRSP while the Australian Agency for International Development provided PKR 1.8 million (USD 19,000/EUR 14,700) for the construction of the plant.

The new hydropower unit was commissioned a year after SRSP switched on its first 50-kW unit in the village. SRSP’s chief executive Masoodul Mulk said at the inauguration ceremony that the hydropower plant would supply more than 600 homes.

He added the hydropower plants built by the SRSP would be operated as social enterprises, with the locals using the income for maintenance work and for social development.
