Malaysia EC Selects Consortia for 2,000MW Coal Project

Malaysia’s Energy Commission (EC) has selected five companies to tender for the 2,000MW Project 3B coal-fired power plant. The proposed plant will be developed at the respective consortia’s site at an estimated cost of MYR12bn ($3bn). The EC received seven request for qualification submissions on 11 March for Project 3B. The power plant will be constructed on a new site in the peninsula and commissioned in stages in October 2018 and April 2019.

The five shortlisted consortia are 1Malaysia Development (1MDB), Formis Resources, Tenaga Nasional (TNB), Malakoff and YTL Power International. All the contenders have either foreign or local partners. 1MDB has proposed the plant to be built at Jimah, Negri Sembilan, while Malakoff has proposed Pulau Carey, Selangor. Formis and YTL Power have both proposed Tanjung Tohor, Johor, while TNB has proposed Tanjung Hantu – Segari, Perak.
