A foreign-funded initiative aims to install some 240 micro-hydro-power generation units in militancy-affected parts of Malakand Division in an effort to benefit community infrastructure and ease poverty.
“An investment of €40m (Rs. 5.1 billion) is being made available to set up micro-hydro-power units in parts of Malakand lacking electricity supply lines,” Shamsul Mulk, chief executive officer of the NGO Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP).
The program will be a public-private venture partnership, with SRSP doing the work and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government’s planning and development department supervising. A team of technical specialists will survey Malakand to identify areas with ample water resources, Mulk added.
