Power export project for Aurecon in Cambodia / Thailand

Aurecon’s Energy team has recently been engaged by Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holdings (RATCH) to carry out a feasibility study into the Koh Kong Power Project in western Cambodia.

RATCH is Thailand’s largest independent power producer and is developing the project in order to export electricity from Cambodia to supply Thailand’s fast growing electricity demand.

Paul Godden, an Associate in our Energy Services Group in Brisbane, said, “Increasing energy demand throughout many of the South East Asian countries has required a significant number of new power projects to be developed.”

“This is an important project win which represents the culmination of extensive collaboration between Aurecon’s Energy team in Australia and our Bangkok office,” he said.

The project involves the development of a new 1,800 MW coal-fired power plant located in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia. The plant will incorporate the latest supercritical boiler/turbine technology and extensive emissions controls and will utilise coal from Indonesia and/or Australia. Electricity will be transported via 500 kV transmission lines connected to Thailand’s electricity grid.

Our scope of work includes development of the plant configuration, fuel selection and advice, plant performance, marine structures and coal receiving jetty, geotechnical and civil aspects, plant layout, capital and operation/maintenance costs, and cost of generation financial modelling.

Aurecon’s services will be led from the Bangkok office by power plant design engineer and project leader Sawat Paitoonsurikarn. Team members from Energy units in Brisbane and Sydney will also contribute to the study.

“There are significant opportunities to provide services to the electricity sector in Thailand, and this win for a major industry participant such as RATCH provides us with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities to the market,” says Paul.

Aurecon provides a broad range of engineering and specialist technical services to many of the world’s leading energy financiers, public and private sector utilities and independent energy producers and distributors on strategic, operational, infrastructure and asset management issues.

“Our extensive experience in electrical power generation, transmission and distribution helps us to offer solutions that significantly improve efficiency and our clients’ ability to meet, for example, fluctuating demand cycles” adds Paul.

Aurecon has successfully provided engineering services on a number of power projects in South East Asia including specification and design review of the SIPCO Cogeneration Project in Thailand and owner’s engineer services for the Vinh Tanh 2 coal fired power project in Vietnam.
