GE Renewable Energy in Hydro retrofit wins Vietnam & China

GE Renewable Energy has signed two retrofit contracts for the modernisation of hydropower projects totalling 3,700MW in Vietnam and China.

The $9m service contracts with Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) and Yalong River Hydro Development Company will require GE to provide parts for 400MW Tri An hydropower plant in Vietnam and China’s 3,300MW Ertan hydropower plant.

Under the contract with EVN, GE will replace control, governing and excitation systems at Tri An project, which is located on the Dong Nai river.

The new digital control system is designed to increase the 4 x 100MW Tri An plant’s efficiency.

“The new digital control system is designed to increase the 4 x 100MW Tri An plant’s efficiency.”
GE will also provide equipment design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and trial run services, as well as balance-of-power.

GE has been contracted by Yalong for design, manufacture, onsite assembly and testing, delivery as well as technical supervisions including installation, testing and commissioning of the related equipment at Ertan project.

The 6 x 550MW Ertan plant on the downstream of YaLong river has helped to minimise the power shortage in Sichuan Province.

GE hydro business president and CEO Yves Rannou said: “I’m convinced that GE’s global expertise and service solutions will increase the output performance of our customers’ fleets.

“Winning these two service contracts expands GE’s business scope and further consolidates our leading position in the hydro segment.”

Both contracts will be managed from GE’s facility in Tianjin, China.

The Tri An hydropower plant generates nearly 1.76TWh of electricity per year and Ertan facility’s annual production is 17TWh.
