Eaton’s EV Technology for China

SHANGHAI, China … Power management company Eaton today announced it will introduce technologies from its eMobility business in China to help automakers meet increased demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the market. The announcement was made at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.

More than 60 percent of the world’s EVs are sold in China, and sales in the region are expected to increase as automakers strive to reduce emissions to meet China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology New Energy Vehicle (NEV) mandate. The NEV mandate is designed to promote NEVs and help auto makers comply with existing fuel economy regulations.

To support electric vehicle manufacturers in China, Eaton has production in-country and has expansion plans underway.

“Our understanding of the unique needs of vehicle customers, and our experience with hybrids and EVs in both China and other regions, gives us a distinct advantage versus suppliers exclusive to the EV market in China,” said Jeff Lowinger, president, eMobility. “China is already the largest EV market, and sales continue to increase due to government subsidies, tighter emission standards and NEV sales mandates, all to help reduce environmental pollution. We’re excited to offer our eMobility technologies in China at a time of rapid growth in the region.”

eMobility specializes in three key areas for electric and hybrid vehicles: intelligent power electronics, power systems and advanced power distribution and circuit protection. Eaton has been a trusted supplier of electrification products to vehicle manufacturers in China and around the globe for years, including DC/DC converters, power distribution units (PDUs), hybrid and battery-electric transmissions and high-voltage fuses, with plans to expand the portfolio of technologies even further.

Eaton’s eMobility business was formed in 2018 by combining products, expertise and global manufacturing capabilities from Eaton’s Electrical and Vehicle businesses to further strengthen its global capabilities and deliver intelligent electrification products and solutions to passenger car, commercial vehicle and off-highway customers.

As a global supplier, Eaton has extensive knowledge of vehicle dynamics and safety standards and experience managing high-voltage power distribution, circuit protection and advanced electric power quality systems.

Eaton is currently supporting electric medium-duty trucks and buses around the globe with its EV transmission solutions. In China, Eaton is engaged in development with multiple manufacturers, including Wanxiang, Zhongtong and others, and recently received an “2018 Outstanding Green Car Core Component Supplier” award at the Green Vehicle Convention 2019 in Beijing.

Eaton’s EV transmissions provide increased performance in areas of range, grade performance, acceleration and efficiency. The compact and lightweight transmissions allow for a significant reduction in motor size for the same application, enabling a steep reduction in motor costs and overall weight. In addition, a smaller battery pack can be used since the transmission improves the energy efficiency of the vehicle over existing solutions.

Eaton has high-voltage, fast-acting fuses in nearly 50 percent of global electrified cars, circuit protection in six of the top 10 EV platforms and power electronics on a leading European battery-electric vehicle platform. Eaton also has more than 15 years of expertise in developing new energy vehicle systems, with more than 15,000 medium-duty bus and truck hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems on the road in China, the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Eaton is a power management company with 2018 sales of $21.6 billion. Its energy-efficient solutions help customers effectively manage electrical, hydraulic and mechanical power more reliably, safely and sustainably. The company is dedicated to improving the quality of life and the environment through the use of power management technologies and services. Eaton employs 99,000 people worldwide and sells products to customers in more than 175 countries. For more information, visit Eaton.com.
