Alstom T&D India has secured a INR550m (€7m) contract to deliver power transformers for the 720MW Mangdechhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan.

The contract with Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (MHPA) will see Alstom deliver 4 x 180MW transformers for the project, which is situated by the river Mangdechhu in Trongsa district, Bhutan.

The deal will also see Alstom provide thirteen units of 75 MVA, 400kV generator transformers and an 80 MVAR, 400kV shunt reactor.

Alstom will design, engineer, manufacture, supply, transport, erect, test and commission the generator transformer, shunt reactor and the related equipment for the project.

The company will use its manufacturing facility in Naini to supply the entire equipment required for the project.

The Central Electricity Authority of India estimates that Bhutan has hydropower potential of about 25,000MW.

Mangdechhu project is one among the ten facilities planned under the 10,000MW hydropower development by 2020 by Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India.

The power evacuation of the project has been planned via 400kV Mangdechhu-Jigmeling through Goling transmission line.

Alstom said its power transformers will evacuate the hydropower generated by the Mangdechhu project.

Alstom T&D India managing director Rathin Basu said: “Alstom T&D India is pleased to contribute to an ambitious hydropower development plan, and help establish a robust electrical grid for Bhutan with its latest technological products.”
