Wind Energy Purchase Begins in India

Inter-state flow of wind power has begun in India with three states buying power generated from a plant in Bhuj, Gujarat, said the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in a statement.

Power generated from part capacity of the 126 MW-project commissioned by Ostro Kutch Wind Pvt. Ltd. is being purchased by Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, the ministry said.

The purchase is under the first tranche of the ministry’s wind scheme and follows India’s first auction of wind power projects conducted by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. in February 2017—in which a per-unit tariff of Rs 3.46 was discovered.

As per the auction, projects with capacity of 1,000 MW were to be connected on the inter-state transmission system. Power generated in states rich in renewable energy could be transmitted to needy states.

Mytrah Energy India Ltd., Inox Wind Ltd., Ostro, Green Infra Wind Energy Ltd. and Adani Wind Energy Ltd. won bids in the auction. Ostro was issued letter of award in April 2017 to set up 250 MW plant, with commissioning period of 18 months.

India aims to achieve a target of installing 175 MW renewable energy by 2022 as Asia’s third-largest economy pushes to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
