Alstom Grid has energised its second turnkey HVDC project in South Korea, establishing a 400MW bi-directional transmission line between Jindo and the island of Jeju.
The project follows a scheme delivered by the French company in 1997 and will help the Korean government deliver on plans for a low-carbon economy.
Jeju is 100km south of the peninsular mainland and previously operated on an independent electric network, suffering frequent blackouts and unstable supply.
“Alstom supplied the first HVDC link at 300MW between Jeju and the mainland in 1997. This second project demonstrates Alstom’s commitment to continuous innovation in the high voltage energy management,” said Alstom Grid senior vice president for power electronics and automation Patrick Plas.
