Singapore is keen on importing shale gas from the United States, and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong raised the issue during his visit to the White House earlier this year.
Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam revealed this during a dialogue session at the South Asian Diaspora Convention on Thursday.
He was replying to a question on the impact of the US discovery of shale gas on the region.
Shale gas is a form of gas extracted by blasting high-pressure water and chemicals at dense shale rocks.
And with shale gas, Mr Shanmugam said the cost equation has been thrown a little open.
Mr Shanmugam said: “For the same unit, it cost $3 in the US whereas the shipped cost in this region is about $18. That’s one of the things that would drive US competitiveness in the next few years.”
