The government of Sri Lanka have announced plans to construct a new coal power plant in the southern province to cope with rising demand.
Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board W.B. Ganegala stated that the plant will be constructed with help from Japan. Ganegala noted that the proposed coal power plant in the southern province will have a capacity of 500 megawatts.
However, a decision is yet to be made on the exact location of the construction. The chairman of the CEB said that discussions about this initiative were held during the president’s recent visit to Japan.
Ganegala added that further discussions will be held with Japanese officials in the future. This announcement comes as the second phase of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant and the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee are to be added to the national grid
