MHPS wins order for 3 Gas Turbines

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) has received an order for three sets of M701 DA gas turbine and generator to be installed at the 400 megawatt Zerger gas-fired power plant for the national utility, Turkmenenergo, in Turkmenistan. The turbines will be supplied to Sumitomo Corporation, who are charged with engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the plant. The power generation system is scheduled to go on stream in 2018.

The Zerger gas-fired power plant will be built in the Lebap Province located approximately 600 kilometer northeast of the capital Ashgabat. Once on line, the Turkmen Government will export power to Afghanistan for 10 years based on a power purchase agreement with the Afghan Government, as part of a project to assist in reconstruction of the country after the damage suffered in the civil war.

Turkmenenergo is a utility under the control of Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan responsible for all operations from generation to electricity supply. The company comprises 9 power stations, including the 1685 megawatt Mary State Power Plant, Turkmenistan’s largest, 1 transmission company and 7 distribution companies, and has a total capacity of approximately 4 gigawatt.

In recent years, Turkmenistan has undergone steady economic growth sustained by world’s 4th largest natural gas servers. Today, the Turkmen government is aggressively promoting development of high valued-added natural gas products as well as diversification of exports and sales channels. Turkmenistan is taking steps to strengthen ties with neighboring countries through these efforts, and this power project for export to Afghanistan is one of these initiatives.

MHPS offers a full range of thermal power generation systems and provides its customers a total portfolio of power solutions. Going forward, the company will continue to aggressively market high-efficiency products to respond to a wide array of user needs and contribute to the economic development of countries and regions worldwide.
