Local Government Announce Plans 3 Hydro Projects IN Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir government is implementing three mega power projects to harness 2,220 MW of hydro-electricity which will cost an estimated Rs 17,290 crores in the first phase.

Chenab Valley Power Projects Ltd will be initially be involved in development of 2,220 MW of hydro-electricity from three power projects: Pakuldul, Kiru and Kawar in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). This was revealed at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here.

In the meeting, further plans to develop a second phase of the 450 MW Dulhasti hydro-energy power (HEP) project were revealed. Abdullah said self-reliance in power generation looms large on economic spectrum and a multi- pronged strategy has been put in place by his government to make necessary dent in power generation and its distribution.

The growth and development of economy in a state like J&K greatly depends on availability of power, he said, adding the state has rich potential for generation of hydro-energy and this aspect has been flagged as one of the most important concerns in the development agenda.

The Pakuldul HEP that involves an estimated expenditure of Rs 8,847.81 crore is likely to generate 1000 MW of power. The completion schedule of the project is six years from the date of award of works.

Pakuldul project is located in Kishtwar district and will utiliseMarusudar tributary of river Chinab at village Drangdhuran, about 45-kms from Kishtwar.

The power station will be under ground at village Dul about 26 kilometers from Kishtwar. It will have four units of 250 MW capacity each, and the annual power generation from this project will be 3,228.41 million units.
