KEPCO Philippines keen on coal plant at Hanjin shipyard

Kepco Philippines Corp., a unit of Korea Electric Power Corp., is still keen on developing a 200-megawatt coal plant for the shipyard of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd.-Philippines.

“Pursuant to the agreemen signed between the Philippine and Korean governments during the visit of Korean president, Kepco is still interested in putting up a power plant with Hanjin in the Philippines with planned location not yet determined,” Kepco president is Kyu-beng Hwang told reporters at the sidelines of the Energy Investment Forum 2012.

The Energy Department signed a memorandum of agreement with the Korean Minister of Knowledge Hong Suk Woo for the start of feasibility studies for the project. The agreement was an offshoot of the visit of South Korea President Lee Myung Bak in November last year.

Kepco earlier indicated its plan to build a 200-megawatt dedicated coal plant to address the power needs of Hanjin. Previous reports estimated the project to cost $450 million
