A ceremony was held on Monday launching the 35 megawatt Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant of the local government of Marawi City and Lim Solar Philippines Venture, costing P4.7 billion. The plant, will rise in Marawi City’s sprawling 30-hectare newly-converted industrial land. Various sectoral representatives attended the ground-breaking ceremony and laying of the time capsule, among them from officials and staff from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Grid Corporation of the Philsippines (NGCP). When completed, the power plant is expected to spell the end of electricity outages, and power consumers will pay only P3/kilowatt-hour instead of the current rate of P6/kilowatt hour. The solar PV Power Plant is said to be the only solar project of its scale in Asia outside of China and Thailand. The same project is expected to spur industrial and commercial projects from the private sector due to comparative stability and reliability of its environment-friendly power source.
