Biogas Plant in Development in Jayanagar

The foundation stone for the first biogas plant in Jayanagar is set to be laid on Monday. The constituency generates around 32 tonnes of garbage. Of this, 11 tonnes are dry waste and 21 tonnes are wet waste. They will be separated, and the wet waste will be used for biogas. The plant will have a capacity of around 50 tonnes.

“The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will be putting up 16 bio methanation plants across the city. This will ensure an effective way to dispose of garbage daily,” said NR Ramesh, councilor for the area. Currently, the constituency spends Rs1.75 lakh on electricity for lighting up seven parks, the Yediyur lake, a community hall, the BBMP office and a primary health centre.

“We will be generating a little over one megawatt from this plant alone. This will bring down our expenditure on electricity. We will also be selling power generated here to neighbouring areas,” he said.

Explaining that this will reduce cost of transporting the garbage collected in the areas to the landfills, he said: “We will save nearly 75% on transport. We will also save on time as waste will be collected and immediately disposed of.”

Four companies have come forward to set up the plant which will be ready in four months. “We are looking at one of the four companies; the cheapest will be given the job. is a site owned by the BBMP near NMKRV College at Jayanagar 3rd stage where the plant will be set up,” he said. Nine companies have come forward to collect dry waste.

“We will take a decision in a couple of days,” Murthy said.
