WBERC use KEPCO to help reduce power losses

West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission (WBERC) has roped in Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) to undertake a study on the possibility of reducing transmission and distribution losses in West Bengal-based power distribution companies.

CESC, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company, Damodar Valley Corporation and Indian Power are the major power distribution companies in the state. KEPCO will conduct its study on all of these.

KEPCO, a Korean public sector major, will submit its report after six months. A memorandum of understanding to this affect has been signed between WBERC and KEPCO on Friday. KEPCO’s study would be funded by the Korean government under India-Korea bi-lateral relations.

After the study is complete, KEPCO will offer packages to respective distribution companies for improvement in their transmission and distribution systems.

State power minister Shobhandeb Chatterjee said: “T&D losses are high for WESEDCL and CESC. If these can be controlled tariffs could be reduced.”
