RusHydro to design major new hydro project in India

RusHydro International AG, a subsidiary of JSC RusHydro , has won a contract from NEEPCO (India) to design the 3750MW capacity second phase of the Upper Siang hydropower project – one of the largest hydroelectric plants in Asia and the largest in India.

RusHydro International India, a Russian-Indian joint-venture, will act as operator of the project. The surveying and design work on the project will take up to 24 months, RusHydro said, noting that it also plans to participate in the tender for construction of the US$16 billion project.

“RusHydro also plans to participate in the tender for construction of the US$16 billion project.”

RusHydro International AG – in cooperation with RusHydro’s Institute Hydroproject – previously won the tender for feasibility study for the plant.

“The project is very important not only for RusHydro, but for all of Russia,” said George Rizhinashvili, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of RusHydro.

“This is an important step for the country in returning to the Asia-Pacific and strengthening our position in the region. Our partner, NEEPCO, is one of the largest state-run economic player in the North-West of India, which gives RusHydro access to the region with the highest hydro potential in the country. We intend to take a leading position in India’s power engineering in broader sense of the term. We also believe that the project should pave the way for other Russian companies to this promising region.”
