22 new hydro projects for Mindano

Construction will begin on 22 new hydroelectric projects on Mindano Island this year after the Filipino Department of Energy (DOE) announced it awarded pre-development and development contracts to nine organizations on Jan. 2.
Published reports indicate the projects, in the Davao Region, have a combined potential capacity of 256.35 MW. Neither the total financial outlay for the projects nor a final completion date is immediately available. Nine different organizations own the projects and they include private companies, local government units and electric cooperatives.
An estimated 5 million people live in the five provinces of Davao Region and it is the second-most populous area on the southeastern coast of Mindano Island in the Philippines. It lies outside of the typhoon belt and suffers from continual, pervasive power outages, according to published reports.
According to DOE, the proposed hydropower projects and their development groups/owners are:
• San Lorenzo Builders & Developers Group Inc. –– 140-MW Davao in Davao City, the largest single project in terms of capacity
• Global Sibagat Hydro Power Corp. ¬–– 34-MW Casauman in Manay, Davao Oriental
• Hedcor Tamugan Inc. –– 11.5-MW Tamugan in Davao City
• Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative (Dasureco) –– 5-MW Ruparan in Digos City, Davao del Sur
• Euro Hydro Power (Asia) Holdings Inc. will develop nine hydroelectric projects that have a combined potential capacity of 13.35 MW:
o 1.7-MW Guma River
o 700-kW Bulatakay Creek in Digos City, Davao del Sur
o 2.5-MW Napon River in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur
o 1-MW New Bataam in New Bataan, Compostela Valley
o 1.4-MW Dapnan and 2-MW Baganga River in Baganga, Davao Oriental
o 750-kW Manay in Manay, Davao Oriental
o 1.8-MW Quinonoan River 1 and 1.5-MW Quinonoan River 2 at the Quinonoan River in Davao Oriental
• Municipality of Malita –– 2.5 MW Malita in Malita, Davao del Sur
• Sta. Clara Power Corp. has five projects in its pipeline, which are all located in Maco, Compostela Valley, with a potential capacity of 16 MW:
o 4-MW Upper Maco
o 2-MW Mt. Leonard
o 4-MW Tagum River
o 3-MW Hijo River 1
o 3-MW Hijo River 2
• LGS Renewable Energies Corp. –– 2-MW Osmena and 17-MW Manorigao in Caraga, Davao Oriental
• Alsons Energy Development Corp. –– 15-MW Sumlog 2 in Lupon, Davao Oriental

Rolando J. Fara-on, DOE Mindanao senior science research specialist and engineer, said the awarded service contracts are for site pre-development and development. The pre-development service contracts will allow companies to begin site feasibility studies and compile required documents, certificates and government endorsements.
Davao Light & Power Co. and Dasureco also received a boost in power supply in May 2014 with the commissioning of two hydroelectric power plants, the 6.6-MW Tudaya 1 and 7-MW Tudaya 2 hydropower plants at Barangay Sibulan and Barangay Astorga in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
Tudaya 1 harnesses the Baroring River, while Tudaya 2 utilizes the Sibulan River. Combined, the projects represent a total investment of almost US$53.4 million.
